Surfside Apartments Nearing Completion on $ 32M Renovation

West Haven, CT – Viking Construction is nearing completion on a $ 32.5 million renovation of the Surfside Apartments located along the waterfront in West Haven. Viking fully updated and refurbished 254 individual apartment units in the three-building complex, which was occupied and operational during the entire construction project.
The assisted-living complex includes a 12-story building, a 3-story structure, and a connected community center. Viking started the project on the roof and top floor of the 12-story building to upgrade drainage, mitigate leaks and fix water damage. After abatement and demolition
Surfside Apartments of the 12th floor was complete, the buildout team took over. Working two floors at a time, Viking was able to coordinate
demolition and renovation around the schedule of residents moving out and then back in to their new homes.
Viking converted some units in the 3-story building to be handicap-accessible, per current regulations. This included widening entryways and hallways and making improvements to bathrooms. In both buildings, each apartment unit was upgraded to include granite countertops, EVP flooring, stone dust composite showers and surrounds, and energy-efficient appliances. Viking added panels to windows so owners can hook up and control their own portable AC units.
The large community center was also fully updated with gathering spaces, a

small efficiency kitchen, and common bathrooms. The first-floor offices and nursing station were also renovated. For the entire complex, Viking replaced the central boiler, fire pumps, sprinkler system and heads, and electrical. Plumbing was updated to meet current standards.
In order to minimize disruption to residents, employees and visitors to Surfside, Viking coordinated delivery of materials for each floor to have what was needed onsite only in the timeframe that it was needed. This had to be balanced with supplier inventory( particularly with the windows) so there were no delays.
