July is our biannual focus on Life Science Facilities and Industry Awards. In the Life Science focus, industry experts describe how existing buildings are being transformed into specialized environments for research

and pharmaceutical manufacturing. Preplanning and prefabrication, as Edward Gould of Interstate Electrical explains in his article on page 15, are accelerating timelines and ensuring projects are designed and executed for their precise function and to meet strict compliance standards.
In her article, Vera Juul of Margulies Perruzzi describes the top 4 considerations when evaluating a laboratory renovation project. These include making sure your team has a clear understanding of the research being conducted and evaluating the existing systems within the building before beginning the renovation. Building A Better Way Forward.
Viking Construction was honored with an Award of Merit for Civic Projects-Large for its work as general contractor on the Connecticut Humane Society’ s new Pet Resource Center in Wilton, Conn. Viking worked with more than 28 subcontractors to complete the $ 17 million project. Check out all of the winners of the CBC’ s Project Team Awards on page 20.

He breaks down the complexities involved in moving a project forward in the state of Connecticut, and the sustainability initiatives shaping Connecticut’ s public-sector facilities. The ACE Mentor Program of Greater Boston held its 12th Annual Networking & Fundraising Event on June 4, where over $ 535,000 was raised to support its free after-school mentoring program and scholarships for local high school students. Alejandro Miranda, the newly elected president of the organization’ s board of directors, commented,“ The overwhelming support from our sponsors, attendees, and industry partners reflects our industry’ s commitment to investing in the next generation.” Read the story on page 37.
July is the month for soaking up some sun and getting out on the golf course to spend time with colleagues and support a worthy cause. The Associated Subcontractors of Massachusetts( ASM) is holding its 30th Annual Golf Tournament on July 9 to benefit member services and the ASM Scholarship Program. Check out the schedule of this month’ s industry events on page 42.
Our next issue has a focus on Retail / Hospitality and Entertainment. As a foodie, I particularly enjoy seeing all of the new restaurants being designed in our own neck of the woods. The focus also includes theaters, hotels, and shopping destinations.
