Boston, MA – Shepley Bulfinch has opened its new Boston studio at 200 State Street, Suite 805. After nearly a century in the Ames Building and decades in 2 Seaport, a building the firm designed, the move redefines how the Boston team comes together, applying the participatory, research-driven approach the firm brings to complex institutional and research environments to its own hybrid workplace.

A Better Way Forward.
“ The way in which our firm works today comes through in every part of our new Boston studio, planting it more firmly in a city it has long called home,” said Angela Watson, CEO and president of Shepley Bulfinch.“ Each of our studios is designed to reflect its respective communities, and this one expresses its Boston identity through a strong connection to the Harbor and Greenway while illustrating how the firm can

advance our unique, hybrid work culture and commitment to the well-being of all Bulfinches as our other studios evolve.”
Shepley Bulfinch served as design architect and architect of record for the 8,750sf studio, which occupies about half of the building’ s eighth floor. Transit access, commute equity and neighborhood amenities drove the site choice: the building sits a short walk from North and South Stations, the Rose Kennedy Greenway and Boston Harbor, with a gym, yoga studio and lobby café in the building. The firm gutted the existing space and worked with the landlord to adjust suite boundaries, bridging the building’ s 1980s-era geometry with the flexibility a modern practice needs.
The studio is organized around a range of settings rather than assigned desks, with collaborative and focus zones, meeting rooms, break-out areas and all-hands gathering spaces that let the office flex as daily headcount varies. A large, multipurpose lounge serves as the social hub for daily teamwork, hybrid firmwide gatherings and events. An adjacent workshop and maker space keeps model-making, prototyping and experimentation in clear view. The office also displays a rotating selection of archival materials dating back to founder Henry Hobson Richardson, whose first Boston project, Trinity Church, established the firm in 1874.
Daylight reaches deep into the floorplate, with views toward Boston Harbor and the Greenway. Wood finishes and greenery add biophilic connection. Materials and textiles are Red List Free or Red List Approved under the firm’ s Healthy Materials Pledge. Dedicated wellness spaces offer quiet places to reset. Technology is built into workstations and meeting spaces, from universally accessible desktop setups to smart projectors that allow real-time sketching over video, while sound-masking, acoustic ceiling treatments, enhanced wall assemblies and high-performance glazing protect focus.
The firm marked the opening with an open house at the studio on Oct. 22.
