Why Glass Matters More Than Ever in Retail, Hospitality & Entertainment Projects

Retail, hospitality, and entertainment projects ask more of a building than almost any other project type. Whether it’ s a casino, resort, convention center, or flagship retail destination, the building itself becomes part of the customer experience. Transparency, daylight, sightlines, and architectural detailing all influence how visitors interact with a space long before they engage with its services or amenities.
For architects and owners, that raises the bar for glazing systems. Glass is no longer simply an enclosure; it has become an architectural feature that must balance aesthetics, structural performance, durability, and constructability. At the same time, many of these projects are completed within active facilities, requiring careful coordination and installation that minimizes disruption to ongoing operations.
One of the biggest challenges is translating an architect’ s vision into a finished installation without compromising the original design intent. Large structural glass walls, custom metal components, specialty hardware, and complex storefront systems often require close collaboration among architects, engineers, fabricators, and installers from the earliest stages of a project.
Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut, illustrates that level of coordination. During the renovation of retail space within the resort, the design called for 18-foot structural glass walls supported by custom stainless steel spider fittings with no visible framing.
Achieving the desired appearance required every structural glass panel and fitting to be individually fabricated and installed to precise tolerances. The finished storefronts create a seamless visual experience while maintaining the structural performance required in a high-traffic public environment.
Years later, another project at Foxwoods demonstrated how specialty glazing can support an entirely different retail concept. The Card Vault, a destination for collectors of sports cards and memorabilia, required a custom laminated glass display system designed to showcase valuable collectibles while integrating with the existing architectural aesthetic. Extensive planning allowed the installation to be completed within a compressed construction schedule.

Convention and event facilities present another set of challenges. Large gathering spaces require expansive glazing systems that maximize natural light while accommodating significant structural spans and heavy public use.
At Mohegan Sun’ s Earth Expo & Convention Center in Uncasville, Connecticut, the glazing package included curtain wall systems, entrances, stainless steel column covers, and architectural metal components that complemented the building’ s open, column-free design. The extensive use of glass helps bring daylight deep into the convention center while supporting an interior environment designed to reflect the cultural heritage of the Mohegan Tribe.
Across retail, hospitality, and entertainment projects, one lesson remains consistent: successful glazing installations depend on early coordination, precise engineering, quality fabrication, and experienced installation. As architectural designs continue to emphasize transparency, larger expanses of glass, and increasingly customized details, the ability to coordinate those disciplines becomes just as important as
