Richard Walsh Reflects on the Legacy of Walsh Brothers
High-Profile recently interviewed Richard C. Walsh, president and CEO of Walsh Brothers, Inc., about the history of the firm as they celebrate 125 years in business, and what the team is doing to ensure longevity and success well into the future.
Richard C. Walsh
High-Profile: Walsh Brothers has been family-owned for four generations and is now celebrating its 125th anniversary. When you look back at the company’ s history, what values or approaches do you think have allowed it to endure and evolve across so many different eras of construction?
Richard Walsh: First, thank you for your continued coverage of the local AEC industry, and for giving me the opportunity to boast a bit about our 125th anniversary of providing exceptional construction management services to discerning clients throughout New England.
As a fourth-generation family owner, manager, and steward of Walsh Brothers,
I am constantly reminded of the values instilled in me by my father, grandfather, and great grandfather as they built the solid foundation that we work upon now. Generations of dedication to our craft and keeping promises to our clients have earned us a reputation for being one of the most skilled and trusted contractors of choice. While field operations have undoubtedly evolved over time, one principle has remained constant from day one: delivering best-in-class service on every project we undertake. This commitment has consistently earned Walsh Brothers repeat projects from our clients and remains a cornerstone of our success today.

HP: Your firm has worked on many of New England’ s most recognizable and technically complex projects, from healthcare and higher education to historic and civic buildings. What types of projects have most shaped the company’ s identity over the years, and why?
RW: We have been fortunate throughout our 125-year history to be entrusted with delivering the region’ s most technically challenging projects under extremely demanding schedules. We believe that the greater the challenge, the more our expertise and problem-solving capabilities shine. Today, Walsh Brothers is best known as one of New England’ s premier hospital and health care builders, having completed major projects for virtually every leading hospital and affiliate in Massachusetts, with recent expansion into health care campuses in

New Hampshire and Vermont.
Each project brought its own unique complexities, but one stands apart: the NICU expansion at Brigham and Women’ s Hospital in Boston’ s Longwood Medical Area. Walsh Brothers partnered with the owner, the owner’ s project manager, the design team, and consultants to plan a one-story vertical addition above a fully occupied operational NICU directly over some of the hospital’ s most vulnerable patients. The project was executed flawlessly and allows the Brigham and Women’ s Hospital to continue performing miracles for patients and families every day.
We have also been very active on many academic campuses in
Massachusetts, both public and private, having built or renovated iconic buildings on the campuses of Boston University, Boston College, Northeastern, Harvard, MIT, Emmanuel, UMass Boston, Mass College of Art, Westfield State University, and many more, and we are equally as proud of our construction legacy on the higher educational campuses as we are for hospital campus projects in the area. Walsh Brothers have also performed historic preservation and expansion projects for some of Boston’ s most treasured facilities, including Fenway Park, Symphony Hall, and the Custom House tower.
