Jones Architecture Joins Massasoit Science Building Ribbon Cutting
Brockton, MA – Jones Architecture recently joined Massasoit Community College, the Massachusetts Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance( DCAMM), state officials and project partners for the ribbon cutting of the college’ s newly renovated Science Building on its Brockton campus.
The opening marks a major milestone in Massasoit’ s $ 52 million Transformation Through Renovation initiative, a multiyear effort to transform two approximately 50-year-old academic buildings into modern environments supporting science and health sciences education. The event also included a groundbreaking for the project’ s next phase: renovation of the former Science Building into a new Health Science Building.
“ Our students need and deserve these first-rate facilities where they can learn the skills and gain the knowledge that will help them succeed as members of our community,” said Bill Mitchell, president of Massasoit Community College.“ The Commonwealth’ s investment in these buildings, classrooms, labs, and meeting areas is a powerful statement that our students’ success is valued, the quality of our faculty and staff is recognized, and

Jones Architecture’ s work began with an extensive engagement and planning process involving students, faculty, administrators and other campus stakeholders. Workshops, surveys, open forums, utilization studies and programspecific planning sessions helped the team understand how students learn, how faculty teach and how the facilities could evolve alongside Massasoit’ s academic programs.
“ This project was about much more than renovating an aging building,” said Rick Jones, principal of Jones Architecture.“ It was about listening to
the Massasoit community and creating an environment that gives students and faculty what they need today while providing the flexibility to evolve for decades to come.”
The newly opened 26,000sf Science Building transforms the college’ s former Liberal Arts Building into a contemporary teaching and learning environment featuring flexible laboratories, technologyrich classrooms, collaborative spaces and student-centered amenities.
Adaptive reuse and sustainability were central to the design. By preserving much of the existing structure, the project extends the life of the building while reducing construction waste and embodied carbon. The LEED Gold-certified building also
incorporates energy-efficient systems and strategies designed to significantly reduce energy use and reliance on fossil fuels.
Universal design, accessibility and belonging also shaped the project, with welcoming gathering spaces, intuitive wayfinding and flexible environments designed to support Massasoit’ s diverse student population and a variety of learning styles and abilities.
The project now moves into its second phase, transforming the former Science Building into a new 26,000sf Health Science Building supporting programs including Nurse Education and Respiratory Care. Simulation and skills labs, debrief spaces and active-learning environments will help prepare students for careers across the region’ s healthcare workforce. The building is expected to open for the fall 2027 semester.
Jones Architecture is working with DCAMM and Massasoit Community College as architect for the Transformation Through Renovation project, with Commodore Builders serving as construction manager. Studio Luz joined Jones Architecture as a collaborating architect for this project.
